History of Fire Museum

Started in the late 1970's when a group of firemen required something for their open day at Heswall Fire Station. A Dennis F12(below) had recently come off the run and had been given to the Liverpool Museum. After various discussions the appliance was given to the group on long term loan and this was the start of the Merseyside Fire Brigade Museum.

During the forthcoming years the group grew and aquired several more appliances and found themselves in need of larger accommodation. The Liverpool Museum had space in their Large Objects Collection based in a warehouse on Princess Dock and it was agreed that the group should move. At this time the Liverpool Museum also gave the group, on lond term loan, their 1938 Leyland Metz turntable ladder appliance, a SALVAGE CORPS(Below Left) appliance and a Dennis F8(Below Right).

The group remained at the LOS for many years until its closure and then they become a nomad group moving home year to year. Once the largest fleet outside of London the group had to return to storage the appliances belonging to the National Museums. Some vehicles where housed at Speke but on the closure of the station several were farmed out to various members.

In April 2000 with the help of the Merseyside Fire Service the group were able to move into Crosby Fire Station Workshops which were not required by the brigade.
